English & Chinese
Английский язык очень похож на китайский. Многие слова означают просто понятие, которое легко используется в качестве разных частей речи в зависимости от контекста. Множество слов звучат одинаково или очень похоже и пишутся при этом по-разному. Хоть и есть какие-то правила чтения, но исключений столько, что чтение слов приходится запоминать, как и у китайских иероглифов.
English is very similar to Chinese. Many words mean just a concept and can be easily used as different parts of speech depending on context. Lots of words sound the same or very similar, but written differently. Although there are some reading rules, there are so many exceptions that one needs to remember pronunciation of words as with Chinese characters.

Vang Vieng
Ванг Вьенг – симпатичное место на берегу реки, окружённое карстовыми горами, где множество иностранцев любит долго зависать, тем самым портя его.
Vang Vieng is a nice place on a river bank surrounded by karst mountains, where many foreigners like to hang out for long time, thereby spoiling it.

Национальный этнокультурный парк
Рядом с Вьентьяном есть ещё один парк. Находится в весьма запущенном состоянии. Там, в частности, представлены модели разных лаосских традиционных домов.
National Ethnic Cultural Park
There is another park near Vientiane. It is in a rather desolate condition. It has models of different Lao traditional buildings among other things.

Будда парк, рядом с Вьентьяном
Бунлыа Сулилат, согласно легенде, в юности упал в пещеру, где встретил отшельника Кэо Ку, который стал его духовным наставником. После этого он основал культ на смеси буддизма и индуизма и в 1958 году с сотнями своих последователей начал создавать парк из скульптур. Никто из них не был специалистом в этом деле. В качестве материала использовали железобетон, как самый дешёвый и доступный. В воображении автору никак нельзя отказать, многие скульптуры состоят из совершенно странных существ и сцен.
Удивительно, но посетителей в парке было совсем мало, никто не мешал осматривать в тишине и спокойствии.

Buddha Park, near Vientiane
Bunleua Sulilat, according to a legend, as a young man fell into a cave where he met hermit Kaeo Ku who became his spiritual mentor. After that he founded a cult based on mixture of Buddhism and Hinduism and in 1958 together with hundreds of his followers started creating a park of sculptures. None of them were specialists in it. Concrete reinforced with metal was used for sculptures as the cheapest and the most available material. There is no denying the sculptor had good imagination, many of the sculptures have really weird creatures and scenes.
There were surprisingly few visitors in the park, so no one disturbed peace and quite.

Случайные наблюдения
Большинство австралийцев – люди консервативные и нежадные, охотно жертвуют деньги на что бы то ни было, но отказываются от халявы.
Из-за отличия португальской фонетики от английской некоторые бразильцы произносят “cheat” как “shit”, звучит забавно.
Мухи здесь приставучие, и ещё очень не люблю воронов – орут громко и противно, особенно любят это делать ранним утром. А вообще птичек тут много симпатичных, надо как-нибудь пофоткать их.
Кругом много суеты из-за рождества. Как приятно осознавать, что меня это не касается.
Random observations
Most of Australians are conservative and not greedy; they willingly donate money for whatever, but refuse free gifts.
Due to difference between Portuguese and English phonetic systems some Brazilians pronounce “cheat” as “shit”, sounds funny.
Flies are too sticky here. And also I hate ravens for their loud and unpleasant sounds, they especially like screeching early mornings. There are many nice birds here though; I should take photos some day.
There is much Christmas fuss around. It’s a so good feeling that it doesn’t concern me.

Где-то в Таиланде…
Когда я подъехал к городу Пхитсанулок уже темнело, в город решил не заезжать, вылез на объездной и пошёл по ней, чтобы ловить машину дальше или поставить где-нибудь палатку. Место совершенно далёкое от туристического. Вдруг попались на удивление сообразительные местные: “Куда идёшь? Ищешь место для палатки? Тут есть рядом бесплатный кемпинг. Садись на мотоцикл, проводим”.
Подвезли к большому дому, где жил немец с женой-тайкой и детьми. Пригласил даже в дом, всё равно, говорит, пустые комнаты есть. Сначала открыл он там мини-отель, но обычно клиентами были лишь директора школ или полицейские с несовершеннолетними девочками, и он быстро прекратил эту практику и просто принимал редких проезжающих мимо путешественников.
Проснулся я утром под звуки русских военных песен. Этого менее всего ожидал услышать у немца в Таиланде. В Германии, говорит, нормально к этому относятся, слушают иногда, несмотря на войну, умеют отделять политику от интереса к другим культурам. А вот в России я никогда не слышал немецких или каких-либо ещё аналогичных песен. Если кто знает, где есть (желательно в mp3) – киньте ссылочки, пожалуйста.
Somewhere in Thailand…
When I was arriving in Phitsanulok it was getting dark, I decided not to enter the city and took a road around it, walk down it in order to hitch another car or find a place to pitch my tent. The place was far from being touristy Suddenly I met surprisingly understanding locals: “Where are you going? Looking for a place for the tent? There is a free camping nearby. Sit down on the motorbike, we’ll take you there”.
They took me to a big house where lived a German with his Thai wife and children. He even invited me to the house: there are empty rooms anyway. First he opened a mini-hotel there, but his usual customers were only school directors or policemen with underage girls, so he stopped the business soon and just received rare passing-by travellers.
I woke up by sounds of Russian war songs. It was the last thing I expected to hear in a house of a German in Thailand. He said it’s ok to listen to such things in Germany, in spite of the past war, people can separate politics and interest to other cultures. But in Russia I’ve never heard German or other such songs. I someone knows where there is (preferably in mp3) – give me links, please.

Фестиваль воды в Мандалае
Каждый год в середине апреля в Мьянме, Таиланде, Камбодже, Лаосе и Юньнани проводится фестиваль воды перед празднованием нового года. В Мьянме это называется “тинджан”, в Таиланде – “сонгкран”. Я оказался в это время в Мандалае, поэтому здесь фотографии и описание именно оттуда.
Ещё за несколько дней до официальных праздников, проезжая по дороге, люди начинают плескать воду на встречные машины. Затем в течение четырёх дней это принимает массовый характер и нигде нельзя пройти, оставшись сухим. И ладно ещё когда вода нормальной температуры, но иногда она со льдом, и никогда не знаешь какую на тебя выльют.
Главное действо происходит в центре города, где вдоль дорог сооружают специальные трибуны, с которых стоящие там люди обильно поливают из шлангов всех проезжающих и проходящих.
Water Festival in Mandalay
Every year in the middle of April before New Year celebration in Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Yunnan there is time for the water festival. It is called “thingyan” in Myanmar and “songkran” in Thailand. I happened to be in Mandalay during that time, so all the photos and descriptions are from there.
A few days before official holidays people start splashing water in oncoming vehicles on the roads. Then during four days it reach mass scales and it becomes impossible to pass anywhere without getting wet. The water is not always of normal temperature, but sometimes it is with ice and you never know which you will get.
The main action happens in the city centre where special stands are erected along the roads, and people standing on them abundantly pour water from hoses on all passers-by.

Mandalay
Мандалай – второй по величине город Мьянмы, бывшая столица.
Mandalay is the second largest city in Myanmar and its former capital.
Довольно большую территорию в центре города занимает королевский дворец, окружённый водой со всех сторон.
Pretty large area in the city centre is occupied by the Royal Palace surrounded by water.

Bagan
Баган был столицей первой бирманской империи в IX-XIII вв., и во второй половине этого периода были построены большинство из тысяч сохранившихся до сих пор храмов, ступ и прочих зданий. Наиболее сильное впечатление производит не конкретные постройки, а их количество на небольшой территории. Поэтому лучший вид на них был бы откуда-нибудь сверху.
Bagan was the capital of the first Burmese empire in the 9th-13th centuries and during the second half of that period the most of the thousands of the remaining temples, stupas and other buildings were constructed. That’s not any certain buildings, but their quantity on a small area is the most impressive thing. Thus the best view would be from the top of something.

Padaung people
Народ падаунг относится к группе каренов, живёт в основном в штате Кайя и предпочитают называть себя кайянцами. Женщины падаунг известны своими шеями, которые удлиняются от постоянного ношения металлических колец (вернее спирали). С возрастом число оборотов спирали возрастает и вес достигает нескольких килограмм. Мне там говорили, что изначальной идеей ношения колец была защита от укусов тигров, есть и другие версии. Сейчас всё меньше женщин носит такое украшение, и главное причиной сохранения традиции является привлечение туристов.
В Таиланде есть специальная деревня, где таких же женщин показывают туристам, как зверей в зоопарке за деньги. В Мьянме же они сами приезжают на озеро Инле, и посмотреть их можно бесплатно, при желании можно приобрести их текстильную продукцию ручной работы.
Padaung people are one of the Karen ethnic groups. They live mostly in Kayah State and prefer being called Kayans. Padaung women are known for their necks which are lengthened because of constant wearing of metal coils. The older they get the more coils they have and the weight of the coils comes up to few kilograms. I was said there that the original idea of wearing them was protection of tiger bites, there are also other versions. Now less and less women wear such an adornment, the main reason of keeping the tradition is tourist attraction.
In Thailand there is a special village where such women are shown to tourists for money as animals in a zoo. In Myanmar they come themselves to Inle Lake, and one can see them for free and at will buy some of their handmade textile.

О еде / About food
Оказывается в Австралии есть рестораны, где можно есть неограниченное количество и при этом платить на выходе любую сумму. В Перте есть такое рядом с Swan Bells Tower, называется Annalakshmi, еда там индийская, вегетарианская. В Мельбурне, говорят, есть нечто с такими же правилами и с гораздо большим выбором. Очень интересная идея, раньше нигде такого не встречал. Где-то ещё такое существует?
In Australia there are restaurants where one can eat as much as they want and also pay as much as they want at the exit. In Perth there is such next to the Swan Bells Tower, called Annalakshmi. They have Indian vegetarian food. I was said in Melbourne there is something with the same rules, but with bigger choice. The idea is very interesting, I’ve never seen such things before anywhere. Do they exist somewhere else?
